Becoming a Mentor

WISE Mentoring supports children in Primary 6 and Primary 7 across our partner primary schools in North East Glasgow.

Our mentors help children grow in confidence, resilience, self-understanding, and wellbeing through safe, supportive relationships and our WISEbooks, which follow the Character and Wellbeing curriculum.

We are looking for both Weekly Mentors and Flexible Volunteers.

Weekly Mentors

Weekly Mentors join our School Mentoring Programme from October to May.

You will volunteer in one of our partner primary schools during a weekday afternoon, working 1:1 with children within a small group setting led by a Project Leader.

As a Weekly Mentor, you will:

  • Attend weekly term-time mentoring sessions from October to May
  • Build a consistent relationship with your mentees
  • Use our WISEbooks to support reflection, conversation and character growth
  • Help children explore strengths such as self-knowledge, growth mindset, goal setting, resilience, self-control, good judgement and fairness
  • Complete training and a PVG check before beginning

This role is best for people who can commit to the full academic year and are available on the same weekday afternoon each week.

We are especially looking for Weekly Mentors in August and September so our school programmes can begin in October.

After October, you can still apply to be a Weekly Mentor, but you may be added to a waiting list depending on project availability.

Flexible Volunteers

Flexible Volunteers support WISE throughout the year in a more occasional way.

This could include:

  • Covering occasional sessions when a Weekly Mentor cannot attend
  • Supporting Family Days
  • Supporting holiday projects such as Spring or Summer Camps

Supporting other community events and activities

This role is a good option if you want to support WISE but cannot commit to the same weekday afternoon every week.

Flexible volunteers are still part of the WISE community and will still need to complete the relevant checks and training before volunteering with children.

What Does Mentoring Involve?

WISE mentoring is not tutoring or counselling. It is about building a safe, encouraging relationship with a child and helping them discover who they are, reflect, and be empowered to grow.

Mentors use our WISEbooks as a starting point for conversation and activities. These introduce children to character strengths and help them think about who they are, what matters to them, how they handle challenges, and how they relate to others.

A good WISE mentor is reliable, warm, patient, willing to listen, and able to create a safe space where children feel valued.

You do not need to have previous mentoring experience. We provide training, session guidance and ongoing support.
